about

History

Energus is a state of the art training and conferencing centre standing on a seven-acre site in Lillyhall, Workington, along Britain's Energy Coast™. Opened in 2009, at a cost £21.5 million, Energus has become established as a Centre of Excellence for skills training, education and business support.

The main activities undertaken within Energus are:

  • The delivery of training and education across the educational spectrum;
  • The hosting of regional, national and international focused conferences;
  • Encouraging enterprise and providing business support within Cumbria and innovation within the nuclear sector;
  • A high quality events and awards facility within the local community.

Since opening in 2009, Energus has provided state of the art facilities to train in excess of 500 apprentices, hundreds of higher education and degree level students and many more educational events aimed at business.

This would not have been possible without the funding from:

  • European Union
  • Sellafield Ltd.
  • National Decommissioning Authority (NDA)
  • West Lakes Renaissance
  • The National Skills Academy for Nuclear
  • Moving Forward The Northern Way
  • Northwest Regional Development Agency

We are a flagship for NSAN (The National Skills Academy); an employer led membership organisation established to ensure that the UK Nuclear Industry and its Supply Chain has the skilled, competent and safe workforce it needs to deal with the current and future UK nuclear programme. This includes all sub sectors: Defence, Decommissioning, Operations, Uranium Supply, Enrichment & Manufacture, Waste Management & Disposal and New Nuclear Build.

Interesting facts:

  • The boardroom table in the Enlighten Suite was designed by a University of Cumbria student Tim Parkinson. He won a competition to design the table and it was manufactured by another student, John Whitfield, who runs a small furniture shop just outside of Carlisle.
  • The building was designed by Claremount Group Interiors
  • The engineering workshop built to Formula 1 standards is used by the Gen2 apprentices and UTC students.
  • We have an additional resident at Energus, our own family of ducks who live in the pond.
